Highland Lakes Service League gets into holiday spirit

Highland Lakes Service League member Cheryl Aaron (on ladder) places the ribbon at the top of a charity Christmas tree, while Polly Dalton (back, left), Josie Quinlan (center) and Mary Ann Fletcher (right) help decorate the artificial spruce.

The service league is selling raffle tickets for the fully-decorated tannenbaum to help raise funds for ‘Christmaas is for Kids,’ a local charity that gives presents to children who might not get any Dec. 25. The tree, donated by Marble Falls Ace Hardware, 1400 Ninth St., is on display at the store until the drawing Nov. 24. Tickets can be purchased at the store Friday-Sunday and Nov. 21-23.

MARBLE FALLS — Some people might say a Christmas tree should never go up before Thanksgiving.

But don’t tell that to the women of the Highland Lakes Service League. Several volunteers turned out Thursday at Ace Hardware to decorate a nine-foot artificial spruce in full Christmas ornamentation.

The cause is a good one, they say, because the tree will be raffled off to help a local charity Christmas program.

“This tree, which was donated by Ace Hardware, will be raffled off to help out ‘Christmas is for Kids,’” said Cheryl Aaron, the service league president. “The decorations were donated by the members, which means there is no cost. So all the proceeds will go to this wonderful charity.”

Christmas is for Kids is a nonprofit that purchases presents for area children who otherwise might not get any Dec. 25. The service league has been raffling off a fully-decorated tree for at least 12 years to help out the Christmas program, Aaron said.

“The Highland Lakes Service League is a group of local women and we raise funds for local charities,” she said. “And what better one is there this time of year than Christmas is for Kids?”

The tree will be on display at Ace Hardware, 1400 Ninth St. Raffle tickets are $1 apiece and six for $5. Service league members will be selling tickets at the store Friday-Sunday and Nov. 21-23. The raffle will be Nov. 24.

As with previous years, the service league members selected a theme to decorate the tree.

“This year is an old-fashioned Christmas,” Aaron said. “This is something we all really enjoy and it goes to a great cause.”

Along with the tree, a decorated holiday wreath will also be given away.
