‘Driving Miss Daisy’ set to open at HCCT tonight

Actors Robert King Jr. (right) and Sally Stemac rehearse a scene from ‘Driving Miss Daisy.’ The show opens at the Hill Country Community Theatre tonight.

COTTONWOOD SHORES —

The Hill Country Community Theatre’s 24th season has shifted into second gear with the production of “Driving Miss Daisy,” opening 7:30 p.m. today.

The theater is at 4003 FM 2147.

The play, based on the film classic “Driving Miss Daisy,” features a pair of veteran HCCT actors sharing the stage with a talented newcomer, organizers said.

Sally Stemac of Burnet plays the title role, following acclaimed turns in “Steel Magnolias,” “On Golden Pond” and “The Sound of Music.” Stemac, who sings in the Bluebonnet Chorale, is an avid golfer and frequent volunteer behind the scenes at the theatre.

Newcomer Robert King Jr. plays Hoke, Daisy’s African-American driver. HCCT veteran Anson Hahn plays Daisy’s son Boolie.

Executive Director Jim McDermott said the theater is teaming with John Davis of Marble Falls’ Celebration Limo Service to offer a unique door-prize for the production — a limo ride for four to a play at the Zachary Scott Theatre in Austin.

McDermott said the winner’s name will be drawn from among those who bought a ticket after the final performance Nov. 24.

Tickets for “Driving Miss Daisy” are $15 for adults and $7 for children. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday through Nov. 22, with matinees set for 2:15 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 23.
