Burnet CISD schools recognize U.S. service members
BURNET — Not even the rain could keep students and staff from R. J. Richey and Bertram elementary schools from honoring area veterans during an annual Veterans Day celebration Tuesday.
Officials decided to move the presentation from the Burnet High School football field to inside the R.J. Richey gym less than two hours before the opening at 10 a.m.
“It’s a very touching time,” R.J. Richey Principal Jill Wittekiend said. “The fact that you had more than 400 elementary students tightly packed in the bleachers and sitting so quietly was something to be proud of. They were really great.”
The sound of bagpipes played by piper Derek Young filled the gym as hundreds of guests arrived and were seated. He performed several military marches and a regimental lament.
The Burnet High School Bulldog band performed patriotic songs, and Richey and Bertram students marched their annual tribute to honor each branch of military service. Burnet Consolidated Independent School District head football coach Doyle Walker gave the gift of his a cappella version of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Toward the end of the ceremony, veterans stood proudly in line as each one approached the front of the gym during the Walk of Honor to introduce themselves and speak about their military service.
“It’s very touching to look into the eyes of each veteran, and it’s very rewarding for the kids who observe and participate. It’s something they will always remember,” Wittekiend said. “The kids were absorbed in the moment as they realize the importance of this day.”
At the conclusion of the presentation, band director Mike Lewis played taps in honor of all fallen soldiers, and the guests were treated to a special “All American Lunch” in the school cafeteria.
