Bulldogs to face hapless Warriors
“We enjoyed it,” he said. “We worked on a lot of fundamentals. We got kids healed up a little bit.”
After playing one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A, the Bulldogs may finally be able to catch their breaths.
“We have to take care of business the last two weeks,” Walker said.
Burnet welcomes Ingram Tom Moore today at 7:30 p.m. Bulldog Field. Ingram, which has not won a game since 2005, is on a 29-game losing streak.
Don’t bother telling Walker about the losing skid or the fact the Warriors have been suffered lopsided losses throughout the district season.
He wants his players to have a business-like approach to the contest.
“We’ll play as if this is a must-win game for us,” he said.
The Bulldogs are still working on perfecting their running and passing games.
“Those are the things we have to get better at,” the Bulldogs skipper said. “We need to take care of some problems we’ve had. We need to establish both of them.”
Ingram’s opponents have used at least part of the game to substitute freely, rest starters and give players an opportunity to play different positions.
Quarterback Dillon Chafin, running back Bubba Thornton and all-purpose player Chandler West will probably see limited action once the game is out of reach.
Several weeks ago, Llano scored 72 points on Ingram to set a Yellowjackets record for most points scored in a game.
“I think we play our defense and we go from there,” the Bulldogs skipper said. “We get after it and we do what we do best.”
The Warriors are coached by Tim Clarkson, and Walker believes coaches are doing all they can to help the Ingram program succeed.
Another obstacle for Ingram is the community of Hunt, Walker said.
“I think they’re fixing to open another school,” he said. “You feel sorry for the coaching staff and the kids. You don’t know how to approach it.”
The Warriors had a total of 13 players on the roster in the loss to Fredericksburg last week.
“I’ve never had to deal with a situation like coach Clarkson’s,” Walker said. “It’s a bad situation. Your heart goes out to the coaches. Your heart goes out to the kids.”
Still, the coach knows the Bulldogs must get a win in order to remain in the playoff hunt. And since this marks the last home game of the season for the seniors, Walker said the team wants to end it the right way.
“You have to get your kids prepared to play as if they’re a good team,” he said. “It looks like these guys are not very good. But that can come back to bite you on the rear-end.”
