Esprit de Corps wins UIL marching contest

GEORGETOWN— The Burnet High School Esprit de Corps received first divisions in the University Scholastic League Marching Contest for Regions 18 and 26 Oct. 18, officials announced this week.

“The young men and women in the Bulldog Band and Highlandettes are truly a class act,” said Mike Lewis, head director for the Esprit de Corps. “There is a lot of competition to be the best performing group within our region, and I think Burnet really nailed it Saturday night. This is as prepared a group of kids as I’ve ever worked with, and they haven’t reached their full potential yet. The judges had some really nice comments, but they gave us some things to work on, too.”

The school is encouraging fans to go to Georgetown this weekend to cheer the group and help them win a spot at the state competition.

“I think we have a lot of work to get done this week,” said Elizabeth Honaker, a senior drum major and one of two students chosen as the Student of the Month at Burnet High School for October. “We have more sets of drills this year, but I think we have a really good chance of making state. As a whole, our rehearsals are a lot more efficient than in years past.”

Esprit de Corps now advances to the UIL Area Marching Competition Saturday in Georgetown at the Georgetown Independent School District Athletic Complex. There will be at least 26 other groups competing for an opportunity to advance to the State Marching Contest at the Alamodome in San Antonio Nov. 3.

To move to that level, Burnet will have to place in the top 10 to reach the finals and then finish as one of the top five during the contest, which begins at 7 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to Burnet, other area groups advancing to UIL Area are Llano and Liberty Hill. Admission is $4.
