A local restaurant will bring its first barbecue competition, MeatFest, to Kingsland Oct. 16-18, with up to 25 teams competing for a $5,000 top prize.

The three-day event at Hooper’s, 1010 King Court, will feature barbecue competitions, cooking classes, and live music. The event will be hosted by Simon Madera, owner of Hooper’s, Taco Flats, and Churchrow Tejas BBQ. Churchrow Tejas BBQ pitmaster Miguel Vidal will serve as emcee.

The competition begins Friday, Oct. 16, with a Best Taco contest. Saturday’s categories will include chicken, brisket, pork shoulder, and pork ribs.

Four cooking classes will be held over the weekend, including brisket trimming with the Churchrow crew, smoking brisket with Vidal, tortilla making, and salsa making.

Pitmaster Arnie Segovia and Behind the Food TV host Al Wasserberger are scheduled to appear.

Admission for 3-days is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger.

Hooper’s is in the restored 1974 house featured in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The infamous building was relocated to Kingsland and now serves as the home of the restaurant, which was named for the film’s director, Tobe Hooper.
