The Science Mill hosts Robotics and Rocketry Day on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., offering visitors an up-close look at high school robotics and rocketry programs as well as a special presentation from a University of Texas at Austin aerospace engineering student.
All 50 museum exhibits will be open during the event, along with the gift shop and Lady Bird Lane Café. The Science Mill is located at 101 South Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City.
More information and tickets are available at sciencemill.org.
The event is designed to spark curiosity in science and technology through hands-on demonstrations and conversations with emerging science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) leaders, including special guest speaker Alia Riscado, president of Texas Flight at University of Texas, who will discuss her studies while showcasing a 7-foot airplane.
Admission to Robotics and Rocketry Day is included with regular museum entry.
Three competitive robotics teams, including host team the Johnson City Joules, will showcase their custom-built machines. Visitors can meet team members, explore robot designs, see past competition entries, and even challenge the PantherBotz robot in a “shoot-off” game.
“Robots and rockets have a built-in ‘interest factor’ that appeals to everyone in this age group. Seeing how they work and meeting the students and scientists who built them will start many students on the path to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math,” according to a statement from the Science Mill told DailyTrib. “And while not every young person will pursue a career in STEM, interest sparked by these activities will serve them well in any field. It is the mission of the Science Mill to ensure that every child has access to just this type of experience, so we hope to see a good turnout.”
