The Horseshoe Bay Memorial Association will celebrate the completion of a second mausoleum with a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

The new facility, Mausoleum II, expands burial and cremation options for Horseshoe Bay property owners after the original mausoleum reached capacity. It is located near the entrance to the Eileen Hurd Nature Trail off Mausoleum Road.

Mausoleum II includes 48 crypts, a garden with 168 niches and a separate wall with 100 additional niches. The facility was designed to blend into the surrounding landscape, with additional landscaping still planned.

“We wanted it to remain as natural as possible,” association board member Carol Rose told DailyTrib.

The expansion is among the first major projects undertaken by the volunteer-led Horseshoe Bay Memorial Association, which assumed management of the memorial gardens from the Horseshoe Bay Property Owners Association in July 2024.

After making improvements to the original mausoleum, the association turned its attention to building a second facility, funded by a donation from Bob and Barbara McFarland. A groundbreaking ceremony was held April 5, 2025, with construction originally expected to be completed that fall.

The memorial gardens date back to 1990, when Eileen and Wayne Hurd donated land for the original mausoleum along the south side of Horseshoe Creek in what is now the Eileen Hurd Nature Preserve.

Mausoleum I was built with 72 crypts and 48 niches. Another 80 niches were added in 2003, followed by 64 more in 2016.
