Authorities found a World War II-era mortar round in a Granite Shoals home over the weekend, prompting an area evacuation before it was determined that there was no threat from the old explosive.

Granite Shoals police were contacted by a resident about a suspected “unexploded ordinance” at approximately 10:36 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, according to a media release issued by the city.

Police Chief John Ortis told DailyTrib the item was a training aid from World War II.

After consulting with the Austin Police Department Bomb Squad, officers established a 300-foot evacuation perimeter, which was later expanded to 500 feet as a precaution. The bomb squad, Austin-Travis County EMS, Granite Shoals Fire Department and Marble Falls EMS responded to the scene.

At approximately 1:25 p.m., the bomb squad determined the mortar posed no threat. The area reopened, and the item was safely removed.

Granite Shoals police urge residents not to handle suspected explosives and to contact the department if they find a potentially dangerous item.
