Thunder Rock Sports Complex remains in limbo

The Thunder Rock Sports Complex was originally projected to open in fall 2025, but still remains officially closed to the public despite completed construction on most key facilities and amenities. As of Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, the city has yet to release any information on the delay.
The 26-acre city sportsplex at 1000 Flatrock Boulevard in south Marble Falls was originally expected to be finished by fall 2025, according to Parks and Recreation Director Lacey Dingman in a June 2025 DailyTrib story on the matter. The city currently lists summer 2026 as the estimated completion date for the entire project and $3 million as its estimated construction value.
DailyTrib reached out to the city for an update on the current status of the complex, but did not receive a response by the time of this article’s publication.
In a March 5 email to DailyTrib, Marble Falls Parks and Recreation Director Lacey Dingman said the broader site remained under construction by the developer.
“While the playground equipment installation is complete, the broader Thunder Rock site remains under construction by the developer. Once the overall site is complete, it will be conveyed to the City and become a City-owned asset for us to operate and maintain,” Dingman said. “An official opening timeline will be announced once the developer completes the remaining work and the site is ready for public use.”
The sports complex was part of an original 2020 deal between the city and the developers of the Thunder Rock subdivision, which would see the developer construct the park and hand it off to the city once it was completed.
The project has been discussed often in 2026 during Marble Falls City Council executive sessions under the agenda item “Consultation with City Attorney regarding the Thunder Rock Sports Complex,” including:
- Nov. 4, 2025 – No action was taken.
- Jan. 6, 2026 – No action was taken.
- March 26, 2026 – No action was taken.
- June 2, 2026 – Council authorized the city manager to finalize acquisition of the Musco lighting system for the Thunder Rock Sportsplex, including associated warranties, setup and control systems.
- June 16, 2026 – No action was taken.
The complex includes a 4,900-square-foot playground, multiple sports fields, restrooms and a maintenance facility. According to Dingman during a March 3 council meeting, the playground and maintenance facility were complete.
“We’re really excited about a unique playground, and excited to open it up to the public for their usage,” Dingman said during the meeting.
The maintenance facility was completed for $672,570 to support ongoing operations, and the playground cost $428,453.30, funded through the developer’s contribution for the project.
