Mama’s Home Cooking left in ashes

Flames engulfed Mama’s Home Cooking on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 1, ravaging the Burnet restaurant that had served the community for more than a decade. The cause of the fire was still under investigation by the Burnet fire marshal as of this article’s publication.
Several agencies, including the Burnet Fire Department, Burnet Police Department, and Hoover Valley Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the fire at around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The blaze was reportedly extinguished by around 11:30 a.m., but not before catastrophic damage was done to the building, located at 635 Buchanan Drive.
The fire gutted the restaurant, collapsed the ceiling, left little standing, and caused a massive smoke plume to settle over Burnet for hours.
No injuries were reported.
Although the cause of the fire is still being determined, heavy dark smoke could be seen billowing out of the west side of the building’s roof about an hour after emergency personnel first made contact.
The owner of Mama’s confirmed through a Facebook post that no staff members were present at the time of the blaze, as it had ignited before employees arrived for the day.
“Yesterday morning the building housing Mama’s was destroyed by fire,” reads the Facebook post. “Fortunately it was early enough that staff were not yet on site, so everyone is safe. Please help us to bring this decade old restaurant back to Burnet.”
A fundraising site was launched shortly after the fire to help cover costs as the restaurant looks to bounce back and continue operations. The building which Mama’s was ran out of was rented, but, as the fundraising site reads, “everything was lost in the blaze.”
