Alvin “Al” Wayne Penny, 83, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Billings, MT, surrounded by family. Al was born on January 3, 1943, in Marble Falls, TX. He was the son of the late Manning Penny and Ethyl Sayles.
Al attended school in Bloomington, TX, then joined the United States Airforce in 1961, and was stationed at the Glasgow Airforce Base. While in Glasgow, he met the love of his life, Frances “Fran” Penny, while she was working as a carhop at the A&W drive-in restaurant. Al and Fran married on June 11, 1963. Together in Glasgow, they lived, raised and relished their three children, Denise, Brenda, and Brian.
The Penny family was actively involved in their community and First Lutheran Church. In the summertime throughout those years, Al and Fran promoted summer vacations, camping, and the spirit of togetherness. After being honorably discharged from the USAF in 1964, Al spent his working days in the water treatment plant at the Glasgow Airforce Base and many weekends serving in the Montana National Guard as an Armor Crewman. He served in the Montana National Guard for seven years. After Al and Fran moved to Billings in 1989, Al continued in the water treatment line of work at the Montana Power Plant in Colstrip, MT, until retiring at age 65.
Al touched the hearts of many people. He had a good sense of humor, he was hard working, quick-witted, and was always kind and caring. His arms were wide open for his family and those they loved. Al adored his wife, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed working on vehicles, listening to country music, telling jokes, and chatting with friends over coffee. Al served his family faithfully, left many friends and no enemies. We will miss him deeply and forever.
Al was preceded in death by his beloved wife, parents, and his brother, James “Pete” Penny. Left to remember Al’s life are his siblings: Sue Colquitt, Larry “Woody” Penny, Sidney Sayles, and Debbie Sayles-Knier; his children: Denise Penny; Brenda Penny; and Brian & Danielle Penny. Al’s grandchildren, Ariel Popelka, and Eli & Bridger Penny will fondly remember his unconditional love and devotion to them.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on June 13, 2026, at the First Lutheran Church, 621 2nd Ave N, Glasgow, MT.
