Science Mill hosts ‘jaw-some’ Shark Weekend

The Science Mill in Johnson City has a jaw-some two days of fin-tastic fun lined up for young marine biologists when Shark Weekend surfaces July 12-13.
The following hands-on STEM activities will open up the watery world of the ocean’s apex predator:
- Shark Dissections (ages 8-17)—A Science Mill education specialist will lead participants through the dissection of a dogfish shark to provide an understanding of the functions of its different organs and how they contribute to the animal’s survival in its natural habitat. (Only July 12 at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; limited spots; additional fee.)
- See Like a Shark—Using a special process, visitors will mimic shark vision to search for and find hidden prey.
- Electric Snack Attack—Students will “hunt” for prey using a specialized tool that mimics a shark’s sixth sense, called electroreception.
- Chomp Challenge—Guests will design and build a shark or shark mouth using a variety of provided materials.
- Special guest Matt “The Shark Guy” Marchant—This renowned shark photographer and expert will be on site on Saturday, July 12, to meet visitors, share facts about sharks, and answer questions.
The Science Mill is located at 101 S. Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City. Shark Weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 12, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 13. The museum’s more than 50 exhibits and gift shop will be open. Except for the dissection, activities are included in regular admission. Tickets can be reserved in advance at sciencemill.org.
