The Burnet Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the hiring of Dewayne Kyle as the district’s first-ever chief of security during a special meeting Monday, March 3.

The district created the new position in January to enhance school safety measures, including compliance with state requirements for armed personnel on every campus.

According to a March 4 media release from the district, this move will help lay the groundwork for a dedicated BCISD police department.

“The creation of this position is a proactive step in addressing the district’s evolving safety and security needs,” said BCISD Superintendent Aaron Peña in the release. “Appointing Chief Kyle as Chief of Security ensures strong leadership to guide this transition while enhancing existing safety measures to protect our students and staff.”

Kyle, a former chief of police for the city of Bertram, was selected after a competitive search process and brings 39 years of law enforcement experience. His background includes undercover narcotics work, service on a special response team for the U.S. Department of Energy, and holding the rank of lieutenant with the Austin Police Department.

“Chief Kyle balances a firm yet approachable leadership style, and we are confident that his extensive experience has thoroughly prepared him to manage the broad responsibilities of this role in Burnet CISD,” Peña added.
