One of the busiest intersections in the Highland Lakes is scheduled for a makeover, and the Texas Department of Transportation has a timeline for that work.

The U.S. 281-RM 1431 intersection will be getting several new turn lanes according to TxDOT, with work to begin in mid-2027. A right turn lane will be added to U.S. 281 for northbound traffic turning on to eastbound RM 1431.

At the request of the city of Marble Falls, TxDOT will also add dual left turn lanes for northbound and southbound traffic on U.S. 281 at the RM 1431 intersection.

“(City officials) requested for us to look at (dual left turn lanes on U.S. 281),” TxDOT Engineer Joe Muck told a packed Marble Falls Area Chamber of Commerce audience on Aug. 4. “We found out that we could do it, and it was a very good path forward. We are able to make that work.”

The work on the major intersection has been in the works for years, with plans made public in 2023. The old Texaco gas station and Thai Niyom restaurant that once stood at the intersection were torn down in 2025 to make room for the upcoming right turn lane on U.S. 281.

In 2023, Marble Falls City Manager Caleb Kraenzel, who at the time was just the assistant city manager, told DailyTrib that TxDOT had been looking at overhauling the intersection since around 2018.

“The angle the corner creates is so sharp that no large vehicles can safely make a right-hand turn,” he said. “The project will add more capacity at the intersection and help keep large vehicle traffic off Avenue H, which is a residential street.”
