MARBLE FALLS — Good thing the Marble Falls High School girls track-and-field team is used to big meets coming down to the 4×400-meter relay.
The Lady Mustangs relay team of Natalie Schulz, Maddie Johnson, Sarah Lewis and Tess Johnson finished second in the event to help the squad capture the District 25 and 26-5A area meet with 103 total points April 23.
Marble Falls led 87-79 over Leander Vandegrift headed into the final event. The Lady Vipers finished third in the relay to be the runners-up in the team standings.
Both squads were first and second in the District 25-5A track-and-field championships the previous week. And like eight days earlier, the Lady Mustangs beat the Lady Vipers to the finish line for the victory.
Schulz continued to pace Marble Falls. She finished with two golds (100-meter and 300-meter hurdles), silver (triple jump), bronze (long jump) and silver in the 4×400-meter relay.
Lauren Loader added a silver (long jump), a bronze (200 meters), a fourth place (high jump) and ran on both relays for two more silver medals.
In the boys competition, Ryan Becker and Jacob Bryer each earned bronze medals in the throwing events to move on to regionals. Becker threw the discus 144 feet 3 inches, while Bryer had a heave of 45-4½ feet in the shot put. Jacob Metcalf was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20-8 ¾ to end his season.
The top four finishers move on the Class 5A Region IV meet, which is May 1-2 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
