Marble Falls’ Thomas Winters makes golf regionals, all-district

BURNET — Marble Falls High School senior golfer Thomas Winters advanced to the Class 5A Region IV tournament thanks to shooting a 77-75–152 during the District 25-5A tournament at Delaware Springs Municipal Golf Course on April 6-7.
“He’s just an incredible ball striker,” head coach Lonnie Tackitt said. “He’s worked really hard to get to where he is.”
Winters, who made first team all-district with his finish, shot the second-highest score of a golfer who didn’t qualify for regionals as a member of a team.
The top three individuals at the regional tournament not playing for a team advance to the state tournament.
Cedar Park’s Charles Kim (75-72–147) had the lowest score of a player who was not on a team to qualify for regionals.
Leander Vandegrift 1 and 2 finished first and second in the overall team standings.
“It came down to the wire,” Tackitt said. “We knew Charles Kim was the leader on non-advancing teams. Cedar Park came from way back and just missed going to regionals by one stroke. (Cedar Park advancing) actually would have made it easier for Thomas because he had (the) Vandegrift 2 (players) beat.”
Luck also might have played a role in Winters’ final score, the coach said, though the golfer’s 76 average in each round is lower than his season average of 79.
“He’s hitting the ball very well,” he said. “He’s hitting good putts. He had three birdies, but five others rimmed out. It can get really frustrating.”
The regional tournament is April 13-14 at The Republic Golf Club, 4226 Military Drive Southeast in San Antonio.
“He’s very capable of shooting under par,” Tackitt said. “He’ll certainly have a chance to go state if he can play well for two rounds.”
