Stone Valley Music Festival near Johnson City attracts big acts

JOHNSON CITY — Randy Holland has made several big-time bookings this year.

Aside from being Johnson City’s chief of police, Holland is the promoter for a series of seven concert festivals at Stone Valley Music Park.

The first Stone Valley Music Festival is April 11 and features Doug Stone.

“I’m all excited about the entire show. Everybody on the card is fantastic,” said Holland, owner of Real Country Booking.

The 10-acre park is located at 7508 U.S. 290, east of Johnson City and about nine miles west of Dripping Springs.

Gates open at 10 a.m. for the shows, and music goes until midnight. Patrons can leave the park and return.

Stone Valley Music Park owners Mitch and Lisa White finished construction of the facility in 2013. But this is the first year for big acts at the park.

“It’s been hidden,” Holland said. “After this year, we hope to change that.”

The facility has a main stage with a beautiful Hill Country setting behind it. A 50-foot-by-50-foot dance floor is in front of the stage. Above the stage is a VIP mezzanine with a private bar and bathroom. The venue also has a concession area.

Mitch White said he began construction in 2008. His job often took him overseas, so construction was a little slow.

“I ran a bar and grill in Crystal Beach and got interested in the business and live music down there,” White said. “I thought, one day, if I can get an opportunity, I want to build a bigger venue.”

He thought that bigger venue would be a large bar and grill, but plans changed, resulting in the outdoor music park.

Now, the goal is getting it noticed.

For artists, it was an easy sell, Holland said.

“We have them calling us,” he said. “It’ll get easier each year.”

Getting people to come to a new venue is the unknown.

“Hopefully, people have a good time, and we have a nice turnout,” Holland said. “From there, we hope that the word will spread and it will grow each time.”

Other headliners this year include Hal Ketchum on June 6, Cody Johnson on July 4, Dale Watson and his Lone Stars on Aug. 22, Mickey Gilley on Sept. 19 and Tracy Byrd on Oct. 17.
