BCISD garage and bake sale raising money for scholarships

BURNET — The Burnet school district is holding its annual garage and bake sale to raise money for scholarships to be awarded to Burnet High School seniors who have parents working for the district.

But being the child of a Burnet Consolidated Independent School District employee is not enough to qualify, said Burnet High School teacher and coach Andy McHazlett.

“You don’t get it just to get it,” he said. “You have to work so many hours.”

That means graduating seniors volunteer their time toward helping to raise the scholarship money, including assisting at the garage sale, McHazlett said.

“Each class has to raise a certain amount of money,” he said. “If you don’t meet that goal, they get less. If you go over (in money or hours worked), they get a little more.”

The sale is 8 a.m.-2 p.m. March 28 at a new location this year: the gym at Shady Grove Elementary, 111 Shady Grove Road. Among the items for sale is a piano.

The 2015 class has 19 seniors who have parents working for the district. McHazlett said those parents want to be able to give at least a $1,000 scholarship to each student.

Seniors have to bring a college acceptance letter to their counselors, and the scholarship money goes directly to that school to pay for tuition.

Residents may donate gently used items to the garage sale. Those items may be dropped off 4-6 p.m. through March 27 at Shady Grove. If an item needs to be picked up, donors may call (940) 632-9139 or (830) 798-7194.

BCISD food services will prepare items for the bake sale, McHazlett said.

“It’s an awesome cause,” he said. “Every little bit helps.”
