SPICEWOOD — After about a five-year absence, the Texas Gypsies return to Spicewood for a March 20 performance.

The show is 7 p.m. at the Spicewood Vinyards Event Center, 1419 CR 409, and is part of the Spicewood Arts Society concert series.

“They were a sellout the last time they performed,” said Wanda Rosello, the society’s community outreach chairperson. “They have a lot of versatility. They’ve backed up different performers over the years. And they have this retro electric sound.”

The Texas Gypsies are Steve Curry, Mike Sizer, Andrew Griffith, John Hewitt, Steve Howard, Brook Wallace and Lebeau. They perform a unique spin on classic jazz and swing, gypsy jazz, Western swing, classic rock and pop in addition to their original songs.

They have backed up many performers, including The Jacksons, Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Barbara Mandrell, the Blues Brothers and the Texas Playboys.

The Texas Gypsies also have performed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the Shangri-La Hotel.

“They generate a lot of energy with their songs and music,” Rosello said. “The crowd identifies with them. A lot of the music is based on Texas roots. That’s what the patrons like.”

This is the fifth concert of the season for the Spicewood Arts Society, which is celebrating its 15th year. Part of that celebration is bringing back some favorite performers during the concert series, Rosello said.
