BUCHANAN DAM — And you thought your Christmas Day meal was jam-packed.

Joel and Rose Deupree and a group of volunteers are inviting residents of the Highland Lakes to join them for Christmas lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 25 at the Buchanan Community Center, 2398 Texas 261.

Last year, the group fed 265 people. Joel Deupree said he and his wife, who have been hosting the lunch for more than 11 years, can’t imagine a December without it.

“It’s gotten to be something we do,” he said. “It’s a way of life for Christmas. We get plenty of volunteers to help.”

Some of the volunteers are family members, while others are friends, he said. Molly Chamlers is the lead cook.

“They put in a full, hard day,” Deupree said. “We really don’t have a problem with volunteers coming and doing the serving and helping clean up. There are plenty of volunteers.”

The traditional Christmas meal includes turkey, ham, dressing and all the fixings. Attendees may donate money at the door if they wish, Deupree said.

Meals on Wheels will not deliver Christmas day, so Deupree has secured a list from the organization to take lunches to their clients. He said people who need a boxed lunch may call him at (512) 755-5091. Deliveries will begin at 11 a.m.

Leftover food is donated to the Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center in Marble Falls.

With Christmas falling on a Thursday, Deupree said some people may take a long weekend out of town.

“It’s really hard to know how many people will show up,” he said. “We make a generalized amount. So far, we haven’t run out of anything.”
