SAN ANTONIO — The Faith Academy Flames jumped out to a 16-0 lead early Oct. 10 in a district contest against San Antonio St. Gerard but couldn’t hold it in a 26-16 loss.

“We lost our momentum at the end of the first quarter,” Flames head coach Russ Roberts said. “We kept the lead until late in the third quarter, but our momentum was gone and we were unable to get it back.”

The Flames (1-6 overall, 0-3 Division III District 3) drove into the red zone at the first of the game but were stopped on downs by St. Gerard. After a penalty against St. Gerard, the Flames forced a punt.

The punter couldn’t handle the snap and was flushed out by Tristian Wilson. Faith’s Tommy Pelham and Clay Cozby grabbed the punter before Rawley Jackson finished the tackle for a safety.

Leading 2-0, Faith Academy used a 43-yard run by quarterback Magnum Burcham to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Burcham. A two-point conversion put the lead at 10-0.

After a defensive stop, the Flames scored again on a 38-yard Rich Coleman run for a 16-0 run.

With only 50 seconds remaining in the half, St. Gerard scored on a 67-yard pass to cut the deficit to 16-6.

“By that time, we sustained some injuries,” Roberts said. “It was very, very difficult to seize the momentum and get it back.”

St. Gerard scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter and then tacked on their final two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the victory.

The Flames rushed for almost 200 yards but had three turnovers to St. Gerard’s one and were penalized at almost twice the yardage.

Roberts said the team is playing with only three seniors now, and his young squad is still maturing on the field.

“I told them I appreciated the effort they made. I thought some of our kids played excellent football, and some of them played very good,” Roberts said.

Faith Academy’s next game is Oct. 17 against Halletsville Sacred Heart at 7:30 p.m. at the Marble Falls Middle School stadium, 1511 Pony Drive.
