GEORGETOWN — The Marble Falls High School football team lost 62-35 to Georgetown High in a District 25-5A contest Oct. 10.
Depth and the Eagles’ ability to extend drives turned a 28-21 halftime lead into a lopsided victory.

“They’re good,” Mustangs head coach Matt Green said. “You couldn’t go up and down the field with them. Our defense created a turnover, and, at 28-21, I was thinking we’re in it.”

Georgetown (5-1 overall, 2-1 district) scored four touchdowns off seven first-half possessions and five touchdowns on seven second-half possessions. Meanwhile, the Mustangs (3-3, 1-2) scored three touchdowns on six first-half possessions and two touchdowns on seven second-half possessions.

Green said he thought his team surprised Georgetown in the beginning.

“I thought we caught them off guard a little bit,” he said. “But they could throw, they were big up front. The running backs are really good, and their fullback looks like a 240-pound tight end.”

That combination makes it difficult on defenses, the coach said.

The other factor was the physicality of the Eagles. The offense scored on drives of multiple plays and on short drives that featured explosive plays. They also converted on three fourth downs. And their defense was selective on blitzes, often waiting on third down.

“We did block them, and when we had to throw, we just couldn’t do it,” Green said. “Give them credit, but we didn’t beat ourselves.”

Georgetown quarterback Ben Bottlinger threw for more than 300 yards for four touchdowns, and running back Dakota Cahill ran for more than 250 yards and five touchdowns.

Marble Falls junior quarterback Brennen Wooten threw for about 250 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 64 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Daven Manning had 88 yards receiving. All stats were unofficial.

The Mustangs were flagged 12 times for 120 yards, while the Eagles received three penalties for 35 yards.

Marble Falls plays Leander in its homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls.
