SAN ANTONIO — The Faith Academy football team couldn’t have gotten off to a hotter start against San Antonio St. Anthony on Sept. 20.
Hunter Marino took the opening kickoff Salmost 90 yards for a touchdown.
Five seconds into the game, the Flames had a 7-0 lead. The lead didn’t last long, however, in the Flames’ 34-7 loss.
St. Anthony (1-3) drove inside the Faith Academy 10-yard line on the ensuing possession, but Dylan Bradbury intercepted a fourth-down pass near the goal line.
Faith Academy (1-3) drove to midfield, but was forced to punt.
From there, things cooled off for the Flames.
“What we have to do with our numbers is not let them have it,” Faith head coach Russ Roberts said. “That’s where we failed.”
No Flames rusher gained more than 30 yards.
St. Anthony tied the game on a 60-yard touchdown run with 8:04 remaining in the second quarter.
The Flames dropped the following kickoff, and with great field position, St. Anthony scored again.
Faith punted and St. Anthony scored again, taking a 20-7 lead into the half.
Perhaps shaking off the rough second quarter, the Flames forced a turnover on downs to start the third. However, a punt attempt was fumbled, and St. Anthony again took over with great field position. In four plays, St. Anthony drove 27 yards for another touchdown.
“We’re not executing on offense — either the one we started the season with or the one we went to from last year,” Roberts said. “We’re not executing any offense well enough to do it in the face of constant pressure.”
The Flames begin district play Sept. 26 at the Texas School For The Deaf in Austin. The game will be Faith Academy’s fourth road game in a row.
