MARBLE FALLS — Community members are invited to a dedication ceremony of the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center at Marble Falls High School at 3 p.m. Sept. 2.

Then, at 4 p.m. the Mustangs play Fredericksburg, just the way the Herringtons want, head coach Jeff Savage said.

The Herringtons helped turn Marble Falls High School into a powerhouse during the 1980s. Nancy Herrington was a tennis coach at Marble Falls Junior High, while her husband, Charlie Herrington, gave private lessons to many of the players. He died March 26.

Citizens addressed board members of the Marble Falls Independent School District during the regular meeting April 21, asking members to approve the name change. It was unanimously approved without discussion.

The Mustangs already started the team tennis season Aug 21-22, defeating San Marcos 10-1 but lost to Midland Lee 7-10, College Station 4-10 and Austin Weslake 0-10.

“I’m really proud of the way the team fought,” Savage said. “(Each athlete) played eight matches in two days near 100-degree weather. That shows grit; that’s what we need to build on.”

The 16-team tournament was spread to courts at Fredericksburg, Kerrville Tivy and Boerne high schools, which was one of the reasons Savage wanted the Mustangs to play. In addition to the amount of court time, they faced several quality opponents and had to drive a good distance to get to the sites.

“It’s designed to give schools a chance to hit a lot of tennis balls,” he said.

Most of the teams had two athletes who played only singles or only doubles. Marble Falls does not have that luxury yet. So Savage was interested in seeing if his Mustangs would give into fatigue.

“To see the way they fought through that last round, that’s a great asset to have,” the coach said.
