Marble Falls parks projects might have to wait

MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls Parks and Recreation Commissioners learned July 7 the city’s Capital Improvements Projects committee will not be recommending that the city council spend more than $100,000 on three park projects.

Director Robert Moss told the commissioners of the decision during their regular meeting.

“They were not recommended because of the shortage of funding,” he said.

The department requested $100,000 for creating a hike-and-bike trail link between Childress Park and Westside Park; $20,000 for a shading structure at the Marble Falls Skatepark; and $10,000 for park development at Park Ridge and Park View in the Mormon Mill subdivision.

“There are other priorities, and I understand that,” Moss said. “There are other things that are critical needs.”

The parks department has received $100,000 through the city the past three years for capital improvements.

“We’re grateful and fortunate we got that the last three years,” Moss said. “Before that we didn’t get anything of that sort. Once the economy gets going again better and Marble Falls gets going in a positive direction, we’ll have that funding again.”

The city council has the final say in the budget recommendations. The capital improvements would be above the parks and recreation’s regular maintenance and operation budget expenses.

In other action, the commissioners voted to recommend to the council that $4,500 be given to the Marble Falls Youth Baseball and Softball Association, which was the only one that submitted a request for funding. The association was asking for $7,600 “for various purposes,” Moss said.

“They requested funding for various things to help supplement what they do,” he said.

Commissioners also welcomed Kendra Lewis as the Place 1 commissioner and Annie Berg as the Place 3 commissioner. Lewis had stepped down as a commissioner about two years ago.

The two take over for William Hurst and Seth Mayfield, who resigned because they moved.
