COMFORT — The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls track team finished fifth at the Comfort Relays on March 8. The Lady Flames scored 67 points in a meet that featured nine teams.
Sophie McCannon set her third school record in the past two weeks. This one came in the 800 meters as she finished in 2 minutes 25.03 seconds for third place. The old record was held by Kristen Jung at 2:25.28, which was set in 2008.
Faith head coach Steve McCannon noted the athlete raced against strong runners from Blanco in the 800 and 1,600 meters.
“She ran a smart race in the 800 but could not reel them in,” he said. “Sophie competed all the way to line and squeaked out the record. I am really proud of her digging in those last 40 meters even when she knew she was going to be third.“
McCannon noted relay runners had only a half a practice on the events, and two of them had never run on a relay team. One of them, senior Juliette Fisher, helped the girls basketball team win the state championship a week earlier.
The other runners, Sierra Brinkley, Rachel Ormsby and Gabby Sordelet, are performing right where he wants them to, he said.
“Really exciting to see what we can do when it really counts,” he said. “As a coach, you learn to be patient and stick to the process. You can’t win state in March.”
