Fredericksburg snaps Burnet girls’ five-game win streak

BURNET — The Burnet High School girls basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 57-32 loss to Fredericksburg on Dec. 16.
Lady Dawgs head coach Doug Messer noted his team played five games in five days.
“Fatigue,” he said about the loss. “When the whistle blows and the horn blows, we got to go. Fredericksburg played very physical. That was the difference in the whole game.”
The Lady Dawgs only trailed 13-12 after the first quarter, but the Lady Billies outscored Burnet 15-8 in the second period and 26-5 in the third.
“They were energetic,” Messer said about Fredericksburg. “We didn’t have juice in our tanks. There wasn’t a lot we could do. We couldn’t meet their energy. If you can’t meet their energy, you’re in trouble.”
Lady Billies guard Ali Doucet, the daughter of former Burnet High School head baseball coach Todd Doucet, scored 14 points. Teammate Anissa Kneese led all scorers with 18 points, which included three 3-pointers.
This is the Burnet’s first setback since losing to Marble Falls on Dec. 2. Last week, the Lady Dawgs picked up four victories at the Canyon Lake Tournament against Blanco, 66-31; Bandera, 58-33; Lago Vista, 61-20; and Johnson City, 59-19.
Messer said his players applied a big lesson they learned from the loss to the Lady Mustangs: have more than one player scoring double figures.
“It’s been more of a collaborative effort,” he said. “People are stepping up, and we’re scoring as a team. We’d be fine with having three 10-point scorers in a game. As a team, we want it to be that way, a collaborative effort.”
Junior guard Riley Scott played at a consistent level, Messer said. The difference was that other players stepped up to help shoulder the burden including sophomore guards Shaylah Hullum and Katelyn Pool and juniors Micayla Light, Rose Bailey, Danielle Lindley and Hannah McCurry.
“It’s created some consistency with depth,” he said. “We played the way we want to play. We’re getting up and down the floor better. I think our defensive pressure has picked up our offense.”
