FROM STAFF REPORTS
BURNET — KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune and The Picayune are holding a food drive benefitting LA Care in Burnet and The Helping Center of Marble Falls.
The event Nov. 20 gives residents a chance to make a difference in the lives of some of their financially struggling neighbors. KBEY and The Picayune staff are inviting readers and listeners to drop off a non-perishable food item at the KBEY studio in Burnet, located at Washington and Main streets on the courthouse square in Burnet.
All food and money donations will go to the two pantries.
LA Care, located at 507 W. Buchanan Drive (Texas 29) in Burnet, serves the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District’s geographic area. But people don’t have to have kids in the schools or work for the district to use the pantries services.
The Helping Center, located at 1315 Broadway in Marble Falls, serves the Marble Falls area and a portion of southern Burnet County.
Both facilities have experienced an increase in demand the past several years. And with the holidays approaching, both are bracing for more clients.
While the pantries try to purchase food through the Capital Area Food Bank in Austin, officials said the demand across Central Texas has even stretched that food bank to its limit. If they can’t get food through the Capital Area Food Bank, staff at The Helping Center and LA Care must buy it off the shelves at local grocery stores.
So monetary and non-perishable food donations remain an important part of meeting their clients’ needs.
People may drop off food at the Burnet studio from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and even meet on-air personalities such as Ed Chandler and Kay Baker of “The Wake Up Call.”
But if you can’t make it to Burnet, you also may drop off items at The Picayune and KBEY studio in Marble Falls, located at 1007 Ave. K, during office hours.
