SOMERSET — The Burnet High School football team outscored Somerset, ranked No. 21 in Class 3A, during a scrimmage Aug. 16.

Bulldogs head coach Kurt Jones said his team overcame a slow start.

“It’s not unusual in a scrimmage,” he said. “We got on a roll pretty good. We played fairly well in the live quarter.”

Burnet sophomore running back Brock Foster had a 6-yard touchdown run set up by a 54-yard catch by junior Jake McElroy. Burnet’s Korey Campbell added a 25-yard catch, while Joel Johnson had a 15-yard grab.

Bulldogs quarterback Austin Moore threw two touchdown passes: a 65-yard screen to senior running back Trenton Hafley and a 47-yarder to junior receiver Cody Jones.

Then, in the live portion, Foster caught a 15-yard touchdown pass, Hafley added a 3-yard touchdown catch and Johnson ended the series with another 3-yard touchdown grab. Senior kicker Austin Huff added all three extra points.

Somerset scored twice in the controlled portion and once in the live portion.

Jones said he could see the players’ comfort level in the Bulldogs’ basic offensive and defensive schemes after playing in the system for a year.

“Our kids are way ahead of the curve in that regard,” he said. “Our offense was clicking after a little bit of time issues.”

Burnet hosts Wimberley in its final scrimmage Aug. 22 at Bulldog Field, 1000 The Green Mile. Varsity plays at 6:30 p.m., while the subvarsity starts at 5 p.m.
