Marble Falls track wins six individual gold medals at district meet

AUSTIN — District championships sometimes are decided on the final attempt or with a photo finish. And then, there are athletes who are simply better than the competition.
The Marble Falls High School track-and-field team experienced both during the District 25-4A meet April 10-11.
Sarah Stripling won the 800 meters in one of the closest races of the meet, said head coach Kyle Futrell. Stripling set a new school record in 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
“She won it on the last step,” he said. “It was something else. I couldn’t tell who won until the automatic time popped up on the board.”
Sarah Lewis and Natalie Schulz finished first and second, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles, while Teagan Hall claimed the district title in the discus.
And though the 4×400-meter relay team didn’t win the event, the Lady Mustangs set a new school record in 4:06.
“I think our girls had an outstanding meet,” Futrell said.
Carson Bowen, who spent most of his spring at center field on the baseball team, won the long jump on his last attempt.
“Carson just started jumping,” Futrell said. “We’re really pleased. He’s a fine young athlete. He’s a competitor.”
Rey Baltazar won gold in both the discus and shot put. He is undefeated in the discus, and the only meet he didn’t win in the shot put was the Texas Relays, where he was ninth.
“Real pleased with Rey in winning the district championships,” Futrell said. “He really had a good season all the way through.”

“I think our kids really got after it and worked hard. There were some disappointments for sure. Some people had a chance and didn’t make it. But we got after it. We weren’t quitting,” Marble Falls coach Kyle Futrell said.
