BERTRAM — The Texas Attorney General’s Office has closed a 10-month investigation into the City of Bertram and former Mayor Winnette Morris, according to officials.
The Attorney General began investigating Morris and the city in May 2012 after a whistle-blower lawsuit against Bertram was made that alleged fiscal impropriety.
The Attorney General’s Office officials stated Feb. 26 that no criminal charges were filed against Morris or the city and that they will “have no further comment.”
The investigation lifts a weight off the city, Mayor Dickie Allen said.
“I think it’s important we’re no longer under that strain,” Allen said. “I thank our employees for putting everything together and working with the Attorney General.”
Since the investigation launched last year, Morris has moved out of town and resigned as mayor following her husband’s death in August.
Morris resigned in November, and the council appointed Allen as mayor.
