VALLEY MILLS — The Burnet High School girls basketball team are again bi-district champions after a 67-41 win against Alvarado on Feb. 12.

The Lady Dawgs (19-12) used a 13-0 run midway in the third quarter to take a 49-33 lead. In all, Burnet outscored Alvarado 22-4 in the third.

Burnet head coach Mike Cavender called for a 1-3-1 defense that allowed the guards to get plenty of steals. The result was that posts Bryanika Grady and Sarah Poe finished offensive plays with baskets in the lane.

“It was probably our second complete game of the year,” Cavender said.

The other one was the 58-48 win against Liberty Hill on Jan. 11.

Grady led with 16 points followed by Poe with 14, and sophomore guard Riley Scott finished with 10, mostly on drives to the basket when the Lady Indians went to a man-to-man defense.

Alvarado led 16-13 after the first quarter and 29-28 at the half. Cavender attributed the deficits to players adjusting to the setting of the playoffs.

“We had to get over the nerves,” he said.

As a team, the Lady Dawgs recorded a field-goal percentage of 55 percent and had 21 assists.
