Marble Falls boys end season with loss to Leander

MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team’s rematch against Leander High was much like the first game.

The Mustangs had a lead at halftime, but the Lions roared back in the second half for a 66-52 win.

“Proud of the seniors, proud of the way they laid a foundation,” Marble Falls head coach Neil Laminack said. “I told them in the locker room that the foundation was built on the seniors’ backs. Whatever success we have is because of the price they paid this year.”

Marble Falls led 15-10 after the first quarter and 25-23 at the half thanks to a steal by junior forward Frederik Filsoof, who threw the ball to senior guard Joey Blackledge for a layup just before the horn sounded.

But Leander outscored the Mustangs 19-10 in the third quarter for a 41-35 lead. The Lions poured in 25 points compared to Marble Falls’ 17 in the fourth. Leander scored a total of seven 3-pointers in the game to the Mustangs’ two.

Laminack said it only took about five minutes for Leander to turn Marble Falls’ errors into points.

The Mustangs end the season on a nine-game losing streak. Laminack said there’s plenty of work to do in the offseason.

“The teams in our district are bigger and stronger,” he said. “One thing we have control over is how skilled our guys get. They’re going to be more skilled than everyone else.
