MARBLE FALLS — Earning win No. 74 in district play isn’t supposed to be this simple. But the Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team made it look easy as pie in its 62-29 victory against Temple Holy Trinity on Jan. 29.
“We really did some good things,” Lady Flames head coach Jerry English said. “Our quick break was as strong as I’ve seen it.”
Junior forward Kristen Cherry started a 9-0 run in the first quarter to give the Lady Flames a 19-7 lead.
In the second quarter, Faith outscored Holy Trinity 17-0 to build a 36-11 advantage.
“We came out and played considerably better,” English said.
Once the Lady Flames built a 40-point lead midway through the third quarter, it started the new mercy rule the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools passed last year.
Basically, the only time the clock stops when the rule is in place is for timeouts and at the end of quarters. And once the running clock starts, it doesn’t stop, not even if the losing team cuts the deficit to fewer than 40 points.
One negative of the Lady Flames’ performance was them not hitting high-percentage shots with one attempt, according to the coach. The Lady Flames took multiple offensive rebounds on single possessions to score buckets.
English said coaches will intensify their efforts in incorporating more aggressive drills to help the players get used to the contact and keep their concentration to score quickly.
“We are missing way too many layups and putbacks,” he said.[tabs style=”default”] [tab title=”STATS”]
