Daniel O’Connell Jr., 86, died May 1, 2012, in Austin. He was born in Americus, Ga., on June 4, 1925, to Daniel and Princess O’Connell.
His family lived in Dallas for several years, later moving to Houston and then to Pelham, N.Y., where he graduated from Memorial High School in 1943.
He entered Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, graduating in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science in engineering. During World War II, he sailed on Merchant tankers, servicing Allied war ships. After the war, he retired from the Navy as lieutenant junior grade.
He then began work in marketing management for Texaco Inc. in Houston and lived in Texas and Oklahoma. He was with Texaco for 38 years.
He and his wife, Mary, enjoyed their farm in Vermont for many years. Their favorite pastimes were tennis, gardening and being with friends. He also enjoyed traveling both abroad and in the United States. He enjoyed volunteer work during his early retirement years.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, survivors include sons Richard O’Connell and wife Judy of San Antonio and Dan O’Connell III and wife Ramona of Austin; and grandchildren Allison, Bradley and Kevin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
A memorial service is 11 a.m. June 16 at The Church at Horseshoe Bay followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.
