Loss doesn’t end Mustangs’ playoff hopes
MARBLE FALLS — A 7-2 loss to Cedar Park High April 13 doesn’t mean the Marble Falls High School baseball team is out of the playoff race.
That’s because the Mustangs (6-16, 2-6) know the teams they must beat for a playoff spot are Dripping Springs, which they travel to play April 17, and Leander Vandegrift, which they will face on the road April 27. “(April 17) is big,” head coach David Norwood said. “We played well against those teams (in the first round).”
The difference in the game against Cedar Park is that the Timberwolves took advantage of their opportunities.
Marble Falls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when the runner crossed the plate after the ball was thrown in the dugout.
After Cedar Park took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, junior Saul Guzman earned an RBI to tie the game.
But the Timberwolves seized control in the fifth inning.
Junior pitcher Jimmy Damico (0-1) hit two batters with pitches and gave up a hit to load the bases.
A walk and a two RBI double resulted in three runs.
“I thought our kids battled pretty hard,” Norwood said. “We made too many mistakes. The difference in the game was they scored seven runs off eight hits.”
Though Marble Falls didn’t score a lot of runs, the Mustangs got six hits off Tanner Dickerson, who has an ERA of 0.84.
