LEANDER —  The Marble Falls High School baseball team has put to rest any doubts it couldn’t bounce back from a loss earlier in the week.

The Mustangs (6-16, 2-6) called for two squeeze bunts in the fourth inning against Leander Rouse in a 3-2 victory April 5.

Marble Falls had lost 13-0 to Cedar Park Vista Ridge April 13.

In the latest game, junior Saul Guzman and senior Clynt Powell each recorded squeeze bunts for runs, while junior Jimmy Damico hit an RBI single, all in the fourth inning.

Senior pitcher Derek Steffek gave up two unearned runs when Logan Kinder went home in the first and third innings. He pitched all seven innings.

Both teams recorded five hits and committed two errors.

This game was important for the Mustangs; playoff hopes, head coach David Norwood said.

“Every game is crucial for us,” he said. “This gives us something to play for.”

Marble Falls must defeat Rouse, Leander Vandegrift and Dripping Springs to have a shot at the postseason. The Mustangs play Dripping Springs April 17 and Vandegrift April 27, both on the road.

Dripping Springs beat Vandegrift April 5 to go to 3-5 in district play. That means the Mustangs, Rouse and Vandegrift all have two wins.

“It’s going to come down to every game,” Norwood said. “We’re going to have to play well and see what happens.”

Marble Falls welcomes Cedar Park High 7 p.m. April 13 at Scearce Field, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls.
