Lady Dawgs win fourth straight bi-district title
LEANDER — A punishing full-court defense capped with an explosive offense led to the Burnet High School girls basketball team’s 68-35 victory against Wimberley during a bi-district championship Feb. 14 at Leander Vandegrift High.
The Lady Dawgs (20-13) will face Yoakum in an area round game at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at Bastrop Cedar Creek High, 793 Union Chapel Road in Cedar Creek.

"We’re capable of making points and shots if we get open looks," head coach Mike Cavender said. "Our defense had its moments if we created open things."
The Lady Dawgs spread the wealth during the first half, building a 24-9 lead in the opening quarter that led to a 42-20 advantage at intermission.
Senior guard Kati Maldonado nailed two 3-pointers and ended the half with 10 points, 14 for the contest, while junior post Bryanika Grady added six of her eight in the first half. Senior guard Leah Cotton finished with nine, freshman guard Riley Scott scored all six of her points in the first half off layups, and junior post Catherine Hirneisen finished with six.
Burnet wasn’t challenged, allowing Cavender to substitute freely during the final 24 minutes of the contest.
"I was proud of the way our kids came out and played," Cavender said. "My kids are not scared to play anybody. We’re going to get after (Yoakum). Whatever happens, happens."
