Lady Flames overcome Bulverde Bracken in Marble Falls match
MARBLE FALLS — Bulverde Bracken simply had no answer for the Faith Academy girls basketball team Jan. 26.
The Lady Flames ( 25-4, 7-0) defeated the Lady Chargers 85-21 to extend their current winning streak to 13 straight and district streak to 64 games.
"I think we played all right," head coach Jerry English said. "That kind of a game can get awfully ugly. "
The Faith guards were absolutely relentless in their pursuit of the ball. No matter which side of the court Bracken tried to set up an offense, the Lady Flames were there. They deflected the ball. They stole the ball. And they turned those opportunities into points.
If Bracken was able to take a shot, the Faith posts rebounded misses, passed to their teammates and beat the Lady Chargers down the floor for quick layups.
After watching one too many times, the Bracken coach called a timeout with three seconds left in the opening quarter to express his displeasure.
Meanwhile, when the Lady Flames set up a half-court offense, guards made passes to senior post Brooke Field for shots in the paint or to sophomores Kristen Cherry or Juliette Fisher for scores from the low block.
The Lady Flames built a 41-0 lead before Bracken scored with 98 seconds left in the first half. Faith led 43-2 at the break.
Field and Brinkley each finished with about 20 points. Reserves played the final period.
"I thought our intensity level was fair and our execution wasn’t too bad," English said. "I know most coaches would say they’d love to have a district like this. I don’t mind having it tougher."
The team is developing some real strategies, players said.
"Everybody has a role on the team," Field said. "I think this team has come a long way this year. Step by step, we’re proving we’re a team to be reckoned with."
The Lady Flames will host Austin Waldorf 11 a.m. Jan. 28 at The Fire Pit on the Faith campus, three miles east of Marble Falls off RR 1431.
