Lady Dawgs’ strong second period propels them past Llano
LLANO — The Burnet High School girls basketball team has suffered through some unproductive second quarters this season. But that wasn’t the case in the 56-40 win against Llano on Jan. 10.
The Lady Dawgs (12-11, 1-1) trailed 12-9 after the opening period but dropped in 21 points in the second to take a 30-19 halftime lead.
Burnet head coach Mike Cavender credited senior Casey Jo Stevens for the second quarter dominance."C.J. came off the bench and provided a big spark for our defensive pressure, which got us kicked-started scoring points," he said. "I bring this up because for most of the season the second quarter has hurt us, but not (against Llano). "
The Lady Dawgs went back to what they do well – pushing the tempo of the game.
"It was good to see us getting out and running again when we could to get some easy opportunities," Cavender said. "We have been playing way to much half-court ball and need more opportunities in transition. "
Burnet was 16 of 44 from the field for 36 percent and 25 of 36 from the foul line for 69 percent.
The Lady Dawgs outrebounded the Lady Jackets 38-21 and recorded more steals, 21-13.
Senior Hillary Foster led with 14 points followed by junior post Bryanika Grady with 10 and senior guard Leah Cotton with nine. Freshman guard Riley Scott added six, freshman guard Shelby Wilson had five, sophomore Alli Styron put in four, freshman post Emily Poe scored three and Stevens and junior Catherine Hirneisen each scored two. Seniors Callie Haley and Taryn Rosow had a free throw each. Senior guard Shannon Dyer was in the lineup for the first time in two months.
