Lady Dawgs lose to Brownwood; will open district play against Liberty Hill
BURNET — The Burnet High School girls basketball team lost to Brownwood 57-42 on Jan. 3.
The Lady Dawgs (11-10) took an 11-8 lead after the first period.
But the Lady Lions, ranked No. 6 in the Class 3A poll of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, scored 20 points in the second period to take a 28-13 halftime lead.
That was enough for the win, Burnet head coach Mike Cavender said.
"We beat them in two quarters (the first and third) and played them dead even in another, but a very weak second quarter sealed our fate," he said.
The Lady Dawgs didn’t score a field goal for more than nine minutes. They were 14 of 40 for a 35 percent field-goal percentage.
"(That’s) hard to overcome when you’re playing a top 10 team like Brownwood," Cavender said. "We seem to be playing solid ball for three quarters, but there always seems to be that one quarter that sneaks into play which gets us in trouble. "
Senior guard Kati Maldonado led the Lady Dawgs with 13 points followed by senior guard Leah Cotton with eight, junior post Bryanika Grady with seven, senior post Casey Jo Stevens with six and freshman guard Riley Scott and freshman post Sarah Poe with four.
"Hopefully, we are going to be able to correct (field-goal scoring) going forward where we can put it all together for four quarters and make a good solid late season run in district play," Cavender said.
The Lady Dawgs open District 25-3A play at Liberty Hill, 14001 Texas 29 West in Liberty Hill, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6.
