Bulldogs blunt Hornets’ sting, hold on for win
GATESVILLE — The game came down to an onside kick, which Burnet’s Ryan Rundzhieher skied high to recover, but an offside call during the kick gave Gatesville another shot at trying to win.
It wasn’t the Hornets’ night, though, as Burnet claimed the win, 23-20.
The Burnet High School Bulldogs recovered this kick as well and two kneel downs in the victory formation ran the clock out, with the Bulldogs on top of the Hornets on Friday.
“We were up and down the whole night, offensively and defensively,” said Burnet coach Doyle Walker. “The kids played hard. They bent but they didn’t break and I think our defense played well and made some plays when we had to.”
The defining moment of the contest came with a 70-yard drive that ended with a Demone Belmarez touchdown run from six yards out for the Bulldogs.
The drive lasted the latter part of the third quarter and crossed into the final period. The touchdown gave Burnet a 23-7 lead.
