Heritage upends Flames in ‘Battle for the Rock’
FREDERICKSBURG — In the sixth annual "Battle for the Rock," the Faith Academy Flames got off to a running start Friday when Seth McAnnally rambled 53 yards to take a 6-0 lead.
It was the last time the Flames would pull ahead as Fredericksburg Heritage used both a strong defense and successful offensive plays to claim the Rock in a 62-18 victory.
The Rock, a coveted prize mounted on a rock, is awarded to the team that wins the traditional six-man game between Faith and Heritage.
During Friday night’s contest, Heritage responded to Faith’s quick score with a 70-yard kickoff return to begin a first-and-goal situation at the Flames’ 6-yard line. Kenny Johnson punched it three plays later from the 1-yard line. The two-point conversion was good and Heritage took an 8-6 lead.
Faith was able to move the ball on the ensuing drive, but stalled out on Heritage’s 19-yard line. The Flames went for it on fourth down, but came up short, turning the game over to Fredericksburg.
Heritage didn’t squander the opportunity.
