FREDERICKSBURG — The Marble Falls High School football team used its final scrimmage to the fullest before starting the regular season.

The Mustangs outscored Fredericksburg 5-0 Thursday.

“As a whole, I thought they got after it well,” head coach Cord Woerner said. “Team-wise we understand we have to be solid everywhere. There’s a big focus on knowing our positions on both sides of the ball.”

The first group scored twice in a series of 12 plays, while the second group scored once in a series of 10. The first group returned and scored a third time in a series of eight plays and again in the live quarter.

Woerner said the squads did their jobs, but the players aren’t satisfied with their performances.

“Every time they got the ball, they moved the chains and put it in the end zone,” Woerner said. “There’s a lot of technique stuff, a lot of different things we still need to work on.”

The offense was challenged in many ways, especially by their coaches. The Mustangs skipper said the players were tested on how well they knew the playbook.

“We run the same plays out of numerous formations in the scrimmage season,” he said. “We were looking to execute rather than out-scheme somebody.”

Equally impressive was the Marble Falls defense, coaches said. The Mustangs shut out the Billies, the third opponent that didn’t score on them when factoring in what they did to Wimberley and Kyle Lehman Aug. 13 in controlled scrimmages.

“I thought we were pretty aggressive and pretty physical Thursday night,” Woerner said. “The ultimate goal of the defense is to keep them out of the end zone. They did a good job.”

The coach said building depth remains a priority, noting the scrimmage allowed coaches to put multiple players in different positions.

Woerner now wants his players to reflect on keeping the proper mindset.

That was something coaches didn’t see when they traveled to Wimberley Aug. 13 to face the Texans and Kyle Lehman.

But that wasn’t the case against Fredericksburg.

“We were more focused when we started,” he said. “We were more focused when we got off the bus, when we started warm-ups, when we took the field.”

Marble Falls will open the season against San Marcos 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls.

Reserved season tickets are still available. Total cost for all five games is $45 per seat or $10 per seat for people 65 or older. Home games are against San Marcos, Boerne Champion, Leander Rouse, Dripping Springs and Leander Vandegrift.
