Ezra Glen Cook, 88, of Pontotoc died Aug. 17, 2011. He was born in Alpine on May 18, 1923, to Ezra and Lottie (Yeager) Cook.

He met Cliffa Gene Lange while she was attending Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine. They married July 31, 1942. During World War II, they moved to San Diego, Calif., where he was stationed in the Navy for more than two years. During that stay, their first child, Charles Ezra, was born in 1945. At the end of the war, the couple returned to Texas, where he joined his father-in-law, Walter Lange, in the ranching business. A daughter, Candace Dawn, was born in 1947 followed by another daughter, Kristy Ann, in 1951.

He was an accomplished carpenter as evidenced by the transformation of an 1850s vintage house into the beautiful structure that still serves as the family home. He was a recognized breeder of quality Hereford cattle, a conservationist and good steward of the land in his charge.

He belonged to the Baptist church and was ordained as a deacon at Cherokee Baptist Church in 1955. There he organized the first Royal Ambassadors chapter for boys and was their leader. He also served as Sunday school director for 32 years at Cherokee. In 1989, he became a member of First Baptist Church of Llano, where he continued to serve as deacon until 2008. At that time, because of failing health, he went on inactive status and was honored as deacon emeritus.

Civic minded, he served on the Cherokee school board for several years, the San Saba County Hospital board, the Farm Bureau board of directors and the San Saba County Property Owners board of directors.

In addition to his wife, survivors include son Charles and wife Lale of Refugio; daughters Candace Henderson of Cherokee and Kristy Harris and husband Joe of Cherokee and Austin; grandchildren Amy Peters, Wendy McQueen, Dawn Dockey, Neslie Cook, Judd Henderson and Curtis Harris; great-grandchildren Deacon Henderson, Levi Henderson, Lachlan Harris, Benjamin McQueen and Bethany Dockey; sisters Lona Le Dixon of Manvel and Alice Ross of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Don Henderson.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, 307 E. Sandstone in Llano, (325) 247-4300. A service is 10 a.m. Aug. 20 at First Baptist Church, 107 W. Luce in Llano, with the Rev. Rick Cundieff officiating. Burial is in Cold Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers include Jed Tedder, Jay Tedder, Bret Whitson, Richard Ross, Randall Ross and Norman Ross. Honorary pallbearers are members of his Sunday school class.
