Burnet coach: Conditioning is good; offense needs work
BOERNE — Overall, Burnet High School head coach Doyle Walker was pleased with the way his Bulldogs competed against Boerne Champion and Fredericksburg at the three-team scrimmage Aug. 13.
“I was pleased with the conditioning to this point with our kids,” he said. “We didn’t have anybody go down with cramps or anything like that. So I was pretty pleased with that part of the scrimmage.”
One of the big questions for the team was the offensive line. Walker said he was happy with the execution by those players.
“I thought they did a pretty good job considering that they were facing two different defenses and things like that,” he said. “I thought they picked up things pretty well. Of course, we weren’t stunting, but we picked up things pretty well.”
Overall execution by the offense, however, left a lot to be desired, Walker said.
“I didn’t feel like we were quite as sharp as we needed to be,” he said. “We didn’t hit the holes hard enough, fast enough, and I was disappointed that our receivers didn’t catch the ball when the quarterbacks put it on them right there. They’ve got to make catches. Great players make great catches and great athletes make great plays, and in order for us to be successful, we’re going to have to make those kind of plays.”
The Bulldog defense picked up its performance as the scrimmage continued, the coach said.
“We kind of caught up with the speed of things because going up against JV and things like that during the week you kind of lose how fast the game is really going to be played,” he said. “As the scrimmage went along, the better we caught up with it.”
Burnet will scrimmage Leander Vandegrift at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Bulldog Field, 1000 The Green Mile.
Walker said the team has some injuries that will limit some players’ participation in the scrimmage.
“We’re going in knowing we got backups at certain spots,” he said. “In reality, they’re one play away from being a starter, so they’re going to have to fill in. So we got some question marks there. But the kids will perform well.”
The subvarsities will play at 5 p.m. at Bulldog Field. Walker said the freshmen will take one side of the field, while the junior varsity takes the other. They will play for 90 minutes.
The varsity will go through their entire pre-game routine.
“It’ll be a controlled scrimmage up to a certain point,” Walker said. “At the end we’re going to play a live quarter.”
