ARLINGTON — The Burnet High School varsity 7-on-7 team made the most of its last opportunity to advance to the Rivals.com state tournament.

The Bulldogs recently won its pool in a qualifying event in Arlington to return to the state tournament for the second straight year.

“We had to beat two teams in our pool,” quarterback Weston Cozby said.

The event had at least two state tournament bids.

Now Burnet can concentrate on the state tournament, which begins July 14 in College Station.

The Bulldogs are one of 64 teams and must first survive their pool in Division II.

They will play Boyd at 1 p.m., St. Andrew’s at 3 p.m. and La Villa at 5 p.m.

The two teams with the best record will advance to the championship bracket, while the other two will compete in the consolation bracket.

The consolation bracket starts July 14 at 6:30 p.m., while the championship bracket will begin 8 a.m. July 15.

Burnet won the state championship in 2003 when NFL players Stephen McGee and Jordan Shipley were on the squad.

“I’m anxious,” Cozby said. “It’s been years since we’ve done this. I’m ready.”
