The Mustangs beat Elgin 26-20 and Lake Travis 55-37 before falling to Austin Bowie 26-20.

“Lake Travis had a team with their best junior varsity players and second-string varsity,” coach Jerry Watson said.

The loss to Bowie ended the Mustangs’ hopes of moving on to the semifinals. The tournament drew 16 teams separated into four pools. The winners of the pools played in a single-elimination tournament. The winner of the tournament advanced to the 7-on-7 state tournament in July.

Marble Falls trailed Bowie 14-0 at the half.

Watson said Bowie had seven starting offensive players and seven starting defensive players plus 15 reserves.

“They had a straight offense and a straight defense,” he said. “We had guys playing both ways. I don’t know if we got winded. I know they didn’t.”

Quarterback Zed Woerner took every snap in all three games, the coach said, adding Taylor Cauble made a play that displayed his athleticism.

“Cauble made a catch in the end zone, diving to the ground, one-handed,” Watson said. “He pulled it in and rolled on the ground for a touchdown (like former receiver) David Morgan. That’s a good start with his speed and hands.”

Fans can be pleased with the way Marble Falls came back in the second half.

“They definitely fought back,” he said. “They’re a 5A with a starting offense and defense and reserves on both sides. We were in a position to win — we were never out of that game. That made us happy.”
