LLANO — Daryl Friedrich is the new head coach of the Llano High School girls basketball team after serving as an assistant for the past five years.

It will be his first head coaching job.

Athletic director David Yeager said Friedrich possessed several of the qualities for which the department was looking.

"Somebody who has a passion for the sport and wants to be here," he said. "Daryl fit that."

Because he has worked with the Lady Jackets for several years, they already were familiar with one another, Yeager said.

"I felt like I knew parts of the bill," he said. "They wanted somebody who’s going to be there. I thought it was a safe pick."

Friedrich, who coached the junior varsity, applied for the job last year before the Yellowjackets hired Megan Simoneau from Gatesville High School. She was an assistant coach at Marble Falls High School during the state tournament run in 2006-07.

Friedrich is the fourth coach in four years for a program that won a state championship and went to two other state tournaments in the past decade.

"He cares a lot about those kids," Yeager said. "He spent a lot of time with them at the middle school and high school."
